Technology

In the 20 years of production of the D models, there have been some changes in technology. The engines ranged from 75-130 hp and grew from 1.9L displacement to up to 2.3L displacement and electronic injection between 1955-1975. Basically, all engine versions are robust and have a good torque. As the D models are relatively light, the engine power is still sufficient in today’s standards and you can drive the vehicles every day.

The most popular engine variant is the 2.1L engine. It has about 100hp, is robust and usually consumes between 9-10L petrol per 100km. We always overhaul every engine completely. The crankshafts are also fine balanced. This improves the engine run clearly, compared to the factory delivery.

Shift and transmission

In addition to the manual, Citroen also offered a semi-automatic transmission. This semi-automatic is a hydraulic shifting system, that relieves the driver from pressing the clutch. It is not to be confused with a real automatic transmission. The driver still needs to shift gears, but without using the clutch.

Like the engine, we also overhaul the transmission. On request, a gearbox with an extended gear can be installed. It significantly reduces the speed when driving on the motorway and increases comfort.

Hydraulics

Much of the DS was already innovative back then and some of it is still innovative today. The hydro-pneumatic chassis is certainly one of the highlights. How "the floating goddess" can adjust its height is unique in car construction. When not in use, the car literally lies on the ground. When the engine is started, the D model rises. The height is maintained regardless of the load. You can even raise the chassis manually, e.g. to overcome obstacles in rough terrain.

The hydraulics were very maintenance-intensive in the first years, until 1967. From 1967 with the introduction of the "green" hydraulics, this could be significantly reduced. We therefore install the "green hydraulics" in almost all models. Of course, in such a way that it is practically undetectable.

All hydraulic lines are made completely new and all hydraulic components are overhauled or replaced by new ones.

Electrics

When cables are over 50 years old, they are often fragile and then the power supply becomes unreliable. Troubleshooting is no fun for anyone. That is why we always install new cable harnesses with every restoration. This ensures that you can rely on your D-model every day.

The D-models were technical masterpieces in the 50s to 70s, in the 20 years of their production many technical improvements have been incorporated. Today you can profit from them. We can freely assemble and approve engines, transmissions, gears, and hydraulics according to your wishes. Let us advise you.
